At the end of 2022 I began to compose a new version of Henry Purcell’s song „O Solitude“ as a commissioned work for the Berlin-based soprano Marine Madelin. This new musical composition consists of two parts: „O Solitude Part 1“ and „O Solitude Part 2 (Owner Of A Lonely Heart)“.
These either re-mixed or completely new composed versions of „O Solitude“ by the English baroque composer Purcell were world premiered by Marine Madelin as music for electronic playback and soprano in January 2023 at her solo concert „Solitude“ as part of the „Fractions“ festival in Bielefeld.
Over the course of the year 2023 Marine came to my Berlin studio, we made vocal recordings and I made final mixes of the two tracks „O Solitude Part 1“ and „O Solitude Part 2 (Owner of a lonely heart)“.
Later I created experimental-visual music videos, which I see as an important part of my new composition in the sense of a multimedia processing of the topic of solitude.

I took this picture when I was working for a landscape gardener in 2021 and we were redesigning a courtyard in Berlin.
I later reworked this image motif into a black and white image and – which is particularly important from an (artistic) technical point of view – into a vector graphic. This means that the image can be scaled up to very large formats and still retain its paper-cut appearance, i.e. you can’t see any pixelation in detail even in the very large format.
A text in German and English is built up around the image, it surrounds the image, so to speak. This text in turn appears – which is a central component of my artistic technique – in loop and mirrored form.
The image and the text ponder together about time, space and eternity – they do this in a strange oscillation between static and dynamic as well as between the paper-cut-like two-dimensionality and a strong perspective with a suction effect.

A commentary by singer Franz Vitzthum on our collaboration on the „MELANCHOLIA“ project:
The grant from musikfonds.de ensured that the sound artist Alois Späth and I were able to work together musically again after many years.
First we researched the topic of „MELANCHOLIA“ and then embarked on an intensive sound discovery process.
The result – a first extract, a small teaser – can be heard above.
Behind every single sound, including that of the voice, there are many, very many, I would even say extremely many hours in which we had great fun working on sound, timing and drive.
Our aim was to create intermediary performances together. These should include music by Dowland and other composers from all epochs and our own collaborative sound creations on the theme of “melancholy” and, if possible, be surrounded by other (sculptural or multimedia) installation setups.
At a concert in Heidelberg in summer 2021, we were able to present an entire program with our sound-installative creations on the theme of „MELANCHOLIA“ for the first time.

„SIENO“ is a mixed media room installation including two images (alu-dibond prints, matt), a video projection with scrolling text and a soundloop, which can be heard accessing a web audio player with one’s own mobile phone.
